Event Description

In this presentation Ross will discuss the variety of butterflies found in the Dandenong Ranges and Eastern Suburbs, and what plants you can grow to encourage them to visit and breed on your property. Native grasses and sedges provide food for caterpillars of about half the common butterfly species. Most butterflies will breed on only one or two plant species and many of the blue butterflies also require the presence of specific ant species before they will lay their eggs.
Ross will explain the importance of mistletoes for some of our largest and most colourful butterflies.
The impact of climate change on butterfly populations and species diversity will also be discussed.

Ross Field has a PhD in entomology, is the author of award-winning field guide called "Butterflies: Identification and Life History", and has published more than 100 publications on interests such as insect ecology and the ecology, biology and conservation of butterflies.
