Event Description

Should depression and anxiety be automatically addressed with medication? Or should we be doing more to address the causes of mental illness?

Anthony Smith has over 20 years of experience in health promotion, research, and advocacy in mental health and suicide prevention. He believes that to support people in distress, you need to account for each individual's unique circumstances, rather than an automatically diagnose and medicate.

Anthony's new book, 'Default Depression,' marks a shift in the way that science is addressing and treating mental health.

Anthony is currently involved in research into the impacts of working conditions, job insecurity, and unemployment on mental health. His work is gaining public acclaim, and he has been invited to speak at the 2024 Mental Health Academy Summit.

Join us to find out about Anthony's work, the process of writing Default Depression, and the future of Australian research into distress and depression. There will be time at the end of the presentation to ask questions, or to share your personal experience with distress, diagnosis and medication in a safe space. Copies of Default Depression will be available for sale after the event.
