Event Description

Calling all wordsmiths, poets, spoken word artists, short story, letter, speech and song lyric writers!
Share your words, stories and art with others in the intimate, cosy setting of The Parlour at Miller's Homestead.
These sessions are a place for you to connect and be inspired by other wordsmiths and have a chance to perform your works to a respectful and inclusive audience.

Each session will begin with a guest performer and will be followed by an open mic session.

This month's special guest is Rob Fairbairn.

Rob’s achievements as an entertainer, songwriter, recording artist, educator and author are many and varied. He began performing in 1977 with covers band Moonshine, playing for dances and receptions in West Gippsland. Since then, this accomplished singer-guitarist and multi-instrumentalist has entertained audiences around the world and across Australia.

As a member of bush/cabaret band Paradiddle, he has played in school halls, country halls, concert halls and at folk festivals, throughout Victoria and interstate. With OzCelt band The Travelling Wallabies he supported the Fureys, Mary Black and Foster and Allen before tours in Ireland and the UK. As a soloist Rob has played at the Tamworth and Port Fairy Festivals and was resident entertainer at Yarra Burn Winery and for the Puffing Billy Night Train, which led to engagements in Japan, Colombo, Vladivostok and Maputo, Mozambique.

Parallel to his long performing career Rob has been deeply involved in music education as both classroom teacher and author of resources for schools. He is currently working, with his daughter, on “The Listening Room”, a program designed to introduce primary school students to classical music.

As a songwriter his talents have been recognised by John Williamson, Slim Dusty and The Fureys all of whom have recorded his songs. He wrote and performed original songs on ABC Radio’s Saturday morning football show as well as the theme song for Channel 7’s“ Our Victoria”. A Boronia resident since 1978, in 2001 Rob also composed music for The City of Knox’s celebration of The Centenary of Federation, “Welcome/Wominjeka”

While he no longer performs regularly, his involvement in music continues as both tutor and musical director of Croydon U3A’s “Musical Jam” group and its public performing entity, The Pleasant Pluckers. He still writes songs, for each of his three grandchildren’s birthdays and “when the mood takes him.”

Rob is an engaging performer, with a distinctive, relaxed style and a repertoire of original songs and stories guaranteed to captivate, amuse and enlighten
